Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

Along the border of Arizona and Utah lies Vermilion Cliffs National Monument — nearly 300,000 acres of public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management. I spent a few days here in the winter of 2018 exploring the monument’s wondrous rock formations, hiking slot canyons, and driving a 4x4 through miles of deep sand. My favorite moments here were at twilight when the sun would drop below the horizon and rocks would change from orange to soft pink, magenta and white.
